Q: Do We Romanticize Sportscars?
A: Yes we do!
I am still drawn to beautiful sportscars. I really should stop looking on Pistonheads/Autotrader - it's like an addiction. Fortunately I've not been moved to pull the trigger (yet.)
I realize I very much romanticize sports car ownership. Driving on the open road. Driving on beautiful roads, to wonderful places and fantastic events.
Alas, I didn't find enough time for my cars. Didn't do enough driving on beautiful roads. Didn't do enough full stop. And that comes down to my situation.
Q: Is enjoying beautiful sportscars incompatible with working 5 day weeks (sometimes more) and having little holiday time for car enjoyment?
A: Absolutely.
Yes, I work too much, I don't have time for sportscars. They sit outside my house looking pretty and invariably going nowhere very special. And I'm not someone who can have a beautiful sportscar, keep it in storage most of the year, and only get it out for a few special events a year, because ...
Q: Is enjoying beautiful sportscars incompatible with a spend thrift mindset?
A: Absolutely.
Yes, I've spent a lot on sportscars over the years. But when I get the car, then I seem to be reluctant to spend a lot on usage (even though I have managed 1000s of miles in them). Track days are quite expensive and there comes a point where driving around the same circuit starts to get boring. Every time you use a car it's drinking petrol which is costing money (mostly tax.)
Really, to truly enjoy sportscars the way I want to enjoy them, I'd need to be following my dream, driving on beautiful roads, and going to wonderful places and fantastic events. If I don't do that it's a waste. Essentially, I need to be retired with money and I'm not planning to retire in the next year or so, and when I do retire, I doubt I'll have the kind of money needed to really enjoy cars. And I enjoy simpler and cheaper things - like running - very much. A great walk is a great walk and doesn't cost much. I probably get as much out of a great walk as I do a great car drive, and the walk is substantially cheaper.
Now I've got that out the way, a couple of cars I absolutely love.
2007 Lotus Europa:
2011 Porsche Cayman S:
And I definitely won't buy either ...
Final Word: Sportscars are a waste of money for me, because I don’t have the time to enjoy them. If one day I’m retired with money, that’s the time to get a sportscar. But ... 😂
