First Service for my 79200 mile 2002 Porsche Boxster S

7th January 2021:

First service for my 79200 mile 2002 Porsche Boxster S complete and it wasn't too expensive.

If you check out the ongoing record here, you'll see that I've only got 8 stamps in the service history booklet, and last service stamp said 10th October 2018 (over 2 years ago).So I was ready for anything!

The cost came to £658.63

  • £13.67 Oil filter (1)
  • £26.38 Pollen filter (1)
  • £0.40 Sump washer (1)
  • £2.60 Screenwash (1)
  • £4.20 M8 bolts (6)
  • £3.40 M8 nuts (6)
  • £9.76 Fuel cap (1)
  • £115.00 Bosch Battery (1)
  • £327.50 Labour
  • £41.65 Lubricants
  • £4.00 EVN Disposal
  • £109.77 VAT
  • £658.63 TOTAL

I didn't have to replace the battery, but the existing one was too big and couldn't be clamped in, so there was a chance that it might lift if I went flying over a bridge (which I'm not really likely to do.)

The old fuel cap was cracked a little, which explains the occasional whiff of petrol fumes in the cabin.

The exhaust flange fixings were non-existant (the exhaust was being effectively held on by rust) which is why the nuts and bolts were required.

The nearside front track rod needed tightening.

The Future

The rear alignment which was flagged when I went to Micheldever, and couldn't be corrected due to "trac control arms seized in bush", was regarded as okay for now. It's a bit of an expensive job to fix. We'll see how the car drives on a trackday, also can see what the wear is like on the tyres, and will plan to do this in the future. The car already drives very well.

Rear Main Seal is weeping very slightly. This is a common issue with 986 Boxsters. It would have been replaced on 58215 miles in 2013 when the clutch was done. Again, this can wait. It is an expensive job to fix and generally (unless it gets really bad) is left until a clutch replacement is required and then it is done at the same time.

Coil packs being split were mentioned too, but again, best to wait until the major service (which will be the next service for my Boxster) and get them fixed when the spark plugs are changed. Any problem will become apparent if I get a misfire, currently the engine sounds brilliant.

Good News

Good news is that the brakes and suspension (apart from I'd like to get that rear alignment fixed sometime) are all good. Overall the car is in good condition and it is apparent that money has been spent on the car in the past.
