2020.03.07: CAT Driver Training – Performance Driver 'Track' Day at Millbrook (Review)

First event of the year in my Exige.

I collected my Exige from storage on Friday the 6th, and on Saturday 7th morning I drove to Millbrook Proving Ground to partake in CAT Driver Training's, Performance Driver 'Track' Day. Check out their website here: https://catdrivertraining.co.uk/

I've done a little bit of driver training in the past – Lotus Driving Academy, Carlimits @ North Weald, and that's about it.

This was a very good day and I'd highly recommend going.

The day was broken into 5 training sessions:

1) Mile Straight
2) High Speed Circuit
3) Handling Circuit
4) Alpine Route
5) Steering Pad

Things I learnt:

i: Look to infinity and scan back.
ii: If you think you're got your foot fully on the brake pedal but don't feel the ABS, you need to shove harder (the Exige brake pedal is a little hard.)
iii: ABS allows you to brake and swerve safely
iv: Threshold braking (without ABS - feel for when the ABS is about to kick in and stay just under the ABS threshold) allows you to brake in a shorter distance in a straight line than ABS would allow.
v: Trail braking (braking whilst turning into a corner) should be used - when you know the circuit/road - to carry more speed into the corner.
vi: Fast feet (from brake pedal to accelerator) helps settle the car (come off the brake, go on to the accelerator)
vii: If you don't hold the steering wheel, the car will go in a straightline but will also drift from side-to-side slightly (compliance steering)
viii: Hold the steering wheel lightly!
ix: Remember to rest your clutch foot, don't constantly have it hovering over the clutch pedal!
x: With traction control completely off, the Exige will break traction at the rear if provoked, but it is not scary - a very well-balanced car!

Mileage Check: When I collected the Exige it was on a mere 11025 miles. After my day at Millbrook and a tiny Sunday Morning run, it's now on 11358 miles.
